Heather “HAUS” Austin

Coach

I was not an athletic kid.  I never played sports or excelled at any physical challenges. I was usually the last one picked for teams and I was even booted out of a gymnastics class when I was 9 years old because I was so uncoordinated.

My journey to fitness began when I was 30 years old. I was chubby and out of shape after having kids and I wanted to be able to wear sleeveless tops without being embarrassed.  So I joined a gym, started going to group fitness classes and cleaned up my diet. I lost over 30 pounds and kept it off for ten years by going to classes and hitting the cardio machines but I was bored and in a rut…and literally spinning my wheels. My cycling instructor suggested a special class at our gym that was based on CrossFit methods and that is how I met Coach Mike and got hooked on the best fitness program in the world.

I joined Zeal as soon as it opened and saw incredible improvements to my fitness in just a couple of months. More than the physical transformation, my ideas about fitness and my goals started to change. I began to see myself as an athlete for the first time in my life and my efforts in the gym suddenly weren’t just about toned arms or a flatter tummy. I am there to master new skills, lift heavier weights and get stronger and faster. Last year on my 42nd birthday, I even competed in my first CrossFit Competition. I’d never competed in anything physical in my life! If I, the uncoordinated, non-athletic bookworm that I was, can gain the skills, strength and confidence to start competing in my 40’s, then this program can change anyone!

I truly believe that CrossFit is for everybody, at any age or fitness level, and that all of us have an inner athlete waiting to come out! I’m excited to help others redefine themselves and improve their quality of life through consistency, hard work, and intensity. Forget everything you think you know about what you are capable of doing. All of that is going to change and then change again.

Why I CrossFit

I CrossFit because it is fun, challenging and effective. I like that my progress is measurable and I can track my improvements. I never get bored and I am still pushed out of my comfort zone on a regular basis even though I’ve been CrossFitting for 2 years. There are always new skills to learn and exercises that I can improve upon. It is so satisfying to put in the work and see the hard work pay off. I am doing things in my 40’s that I never really imagined or thought I could do and I love the fact that I am getting stronger physically and mentally as I get older. I enjoy that the other coaches motivate and encourage me and hold me accountable. No sandbagging allowed! But one of the best things about CrossFit is the great people you meet and the encouraging community in the gym. There’s a sense of “We’re all in this together” and that makes even the awful workouts more doable somehow. I might dread the workout of the day but I always look forward to seeing my friends at Zeal.

Favorite Exercise

I love to squat. Air squat, back squat, front squat, goblet squat, one-legged squat…I love them all! I’m even starting to enjoy overhead squats. I’m also pretty fond of burpees.

Least Favorite Exercise

Wall ball. I’m not very tall and I have short arms. It takes everything I have to hurl that ball up to hit a 10′ target.

Favorite Benchmark WOD

Grace. 30 reps of 95# clean & jerks for time. It takes good technique, it is heavy and it is short and I just think it is a whole lot of fun packed into just a few minutes.

Least Favorite Benchmark WOD

Karen. 150 reps of 14# wall balls for time. See my least favorite exercise. This one is the worst. It takes me forever to finish and then I feel like I was hit by a train the next day.
